What Kind of Maintenance Does My Car’s Steering System Need?

When you take your vehicle into the shop for maintenance, the steering system is probably one of those areas that are the last thing on your mind. That is why you might be puzzled when your mechanic recommends steering maintenance. To be honest, the steering system doesn’t require as much maintenance as some of the other parts of your car.

Power steering resevoir

One of the two parts that only need to be serviced is the hydraulic power steering pump. This component gives you the extra boost or assistance to steer. The pump is powered by the drive belt or serpentine belt. However, this belt has been replaced in newer vehicles with an electric pump. In fact, some steering systems are even completely electric-powered. Hoses get worn, and the integrity of your power steering components may not be as good as it used to be. That is why the first step of power steering system maintenance is a thorough inspection of the entire system.

If you have a good old-fashioned hydraulic steering system, then you know that the power steering fluid will eventually wear out. This fluid can get dirty sitting in your car year after year. If you need to freshen up your steering system, please have your power steering fluid flushed. This service removes corrosion and other contaminants that can impede your steering ability.

Fresh and new power steering fluid will help keep the steering parts lubricated. Other than fluid flushes, there isn’t much you can do in terms of maintaining your steering system. As your vehicle ages, the hoses, pump, and other parts may need to be replaced. If you notice overly loose or stiff steering, please bring your car to our shop for an inspection.
