Can I Drive With Engine Misfires?

Most vehicle owners have heard of the term, “engine misfire”, but don’t exactly understand what it means. Read on to understand how your motor can misfire, what causes it, and what to do when it does misfire.

Your engine uses combustion to create power, meaning it relies on fire, fuel, and air. When your engine misfires, it can mean that any of these three elements are lacking or incorrectly timed. The ignition process is very precise. If there are any deficiencies, like too much fuel or too little air, your car will experience performance and efficiency problems. One of these issues can of course be engine misfires.

Spark plugs

When an engine misfires, it is quite audible. You might hear a popping or explosive sound and smell fuel or gasoline. More evidently, you will notice a drop in engine power. Here are some of the things that can go wrong to cause engine misfires:

  • Bad Spark Plugs: Spark plugs are the components responsible for providing the spark or fire to kick off combustion. They tend to go bad over time and won’t be able to ignite the air and fuel mixture.
  • Dirty Fuel Injectors: Your engine cylinders require an adequate amount of fuel. If the fuel injectors aren’t spraying enough fuel, your vehicle will misfire.
  • Bad Ignition Coils and Wires: The coils and wires are responsible for carrying the electrical power to start the fire. When these have gone bad, they can’t provide the power to properly ignite the air and fuel.

A car with a misfiring engine can still operate but not for long. You may notice a check engine light coming on your dashboard when your engine misfires. If you are looking for repair specialists to fix your engine, please call or visit Red Rock Repair in Las Vegas, NV.
